| It was essential that Elvis return to the studio in June 1966 before beginning work on his new movie, Double Trouble. Once again, there were new lists of songs; once again, Elvis and the boys listened diligently in Memphis. But what they were really thinking were songs from the past: Bob Will's country classic "Faded Love," Faye Adams's "Shake A Hand," LaVern Baker's version of the Leiber and Stoller number "Saved." Elvis had a steady stream of R&B coming off the record player at Graceland, with Jimmy Reed, Percy Mayfield, and Della Reese's version of "After Loving You" were some favorites. To RCA and Freddy Bienstock it was all old material, but to Elvis it was just great music, and all they could do was stand by painfully as he dismissed one new song after another submitted by his own publishing organization. Studio Sessions for RCA February 17-22, 1969: American Studios, Memphis The spirited chorus of support from Elvis' little circle of friends, responded to his announcement: "I'll tell you what, I'm gonna play piano," at the beginning of the next cut. To an outside observer the song Elvis had in mind, "After Loving You," might have seemed like an off-the-cuff choice, but Elvis had been practicing Eddy Arnold's 1962 hit for years and had informed Freddy that he planned to record it. Playing in his familiar staccato style, Elvis sang the song with the same passion he'd brought to "One Night," pushing it as hard as he could. As accomplished as it may have been, this kind of tossed-off performance was directly counter to the way Chips liked to work. "After Loving You" was recorded February 17, 1969 from 11PM to 2AM.
