| "Danny Boy" recorded February 5, 1976, The Jungle Room, Graceland, Memphis, first released From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee. "Danny Boy" was another of Elvis's favorites, he began with either courage or braggadocio by asking David Briggs to raise the key, but it was too much for him: When he was unable to reach the high note on the word "here," he complained, "I can't make it. I'd like to do it in C. That's where I'd like to do it better." There was none of the usual anger that had so often spurred him on when he sensed failure. In its place was resignation, an acceptance of lesser achievement, and it took a lot of hard work even in the lower key to control that same high note. Take eight was good, take nine an improvement, and take ten became the master. He had at least been able to achieve a convincing display of his full vocal power. It was two in the afternoon when they stopped---after seventeen hours of recording. (The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen) Personal note: When I quote from this book, there are things I omit, things he may have said. Elvis will always be presented as what he was, the greatest singer ever, The King Of Rock & Roll. I have always loved this song, but there is no way I can describe the emotions that went through me when I heard Elvis sing "Danny Boy." I grew up listening to Elvis and I'm sure all true Elvis fans feel the same as I do, almost twenty five years later and he is still missed so much............... |
| Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the roses dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bye But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow And I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so But if he come and all the roses dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be He'll come here and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an ava there for me And I shall feel, oh soft you tread above me And then my grave will richer, sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me And I shall rest in peace until you come to me Oh Danny boy I love you so Words & music: Frederic Weatherlye |
