| "Datin'" was recorded July 26, 1965: Radio Recorders, Hollywood for Paramount's film Paradise Hawaiian Style released July 6, 1966. A duet with co-star Donna Butterworth was recorded August 4, 1965. Top Grossing Film #40 of 1966. Total Gross was $2.5 Million. SYNOPSIS: Pilot Rick Richards (Elvis), down on his luck and out of resources, returns home to Hawaii. At the airport he hitches a ride with an old friend, Danny (James Shigeta), who's flying an executive to a convention at the Maui Sheraton. Trying to land on his feet, Rick suggests that they start a helicopter charter service together. Danny doesn't think there's enough potential business, so Rick goes to work and persuades a Sheraton hostess, Lehua (Lind Wong), to refer customers. Rick's enthusiasm--and his growing customer list--changes Danny's mind, and Danrick Airways is up and flying. On a mission to find passengers, Rick locates a girl, Pus (Irene Tsu), at the Polynesian Cultural Center, who's willing to help--but Rick's got to do something for her. He joins her on stage to sing "Drums of the Islands." His next contact is Joanna (Julie Parrish) at the Kahala Hilton, but she needs a little more convincing, so Rick takes her for a spin. During the ride, Rick has a problem with the chopper, and while regaining control, he forces a car below him into a ditch. Big trouble: The driver of the car was Donald Belden (John Doucette) of the FAA. Rick agrees to take Danny's daughter Jan (Donna Butterworth) for a helicopter ride, but she buries the ignition key in the sand and they end up stuck on a remote beach until daylight. Nothing happened, but Danny is furious and dissolves the partnership. Danny and Jan take off, but when they don't return as scheduled, Rick goes on a tense air search and finds them slightly injured but OK. Danny and Rick apologize to each other and become buddies again, but both fear they may lose their licenses and Danrick will go down the tubes. No one knows quite what to do. Then they hear that Belden of the FAA is to be guest of honor at a local festival. Rick decides to see him in person and find out what can be done. He finds Belden and gives his side of the story. Belden assures him that because of the skill he showed rescuing Danny and Jan, he will continue to fly---and Danrick is saved. ( The Elvis Encyclopedia by David E. Stanley) This has to be one of the silliest songs Elvis ever recorded. So when Dan requested it, the first album I found it on was this version. We all love Elvis's laugh and since the song is silly, I had to use this version. Wish I could have found information on this take, but there was nothing in my books. This came from LP: Elvis Aron Presley, disk 2 |

| Datin' is a game that grown-ups play Datin' means acting in a silly way Datin' makes girls start wiggle walking Datin' makes a guy start baby talking Dizzy like children on a merry-go-round Grown-ups are the biggest kids I've found You'd think they belong in a baby carriage They're doing things that lead to marriage But don't you laugh at what they do, oh no 'Cause some day you'll be datin' too Datin' makes a guy comb his hair just right His girl can mess it up when they kiss good-night Datin' makes you quarrel and say you'll break up And just because it's so much fun to make up Children can't wait to grow up but then They're datin and they're acting like kids again You'd think they belong in a baby carriage They're doing things that lead to marriage But don't you laugh at what they do, oh no Some day you'll be datin' too Words & music: Fred Wise/ Randy Starr |
