Studio Sessions for RCA July 20-25, 1973 Stax Studios, Memphis
July 23 work began at eleven 0'clock with "Raised On Rock," as a brand new Mark James tune. It might have been a relief to be trying on a rocker at this point, but the lyrics to "Raised On Rock" (which had Elvis growing up on the music he himself had helped create) was downright silly. Of greater substance was another Tony Joe White song, "For Ol' Times Sake," which came from his 1973 album, Homemade Ice Cream. Perhaps because it was so close to the way he actually felt, Elvis conveyed an immense sadness with this song, achieving a far more convincing tone than he was able to with much of the dramatic Vegas "love gone wrong" material. He began almost in a daze, as if he were half-asleep, but soon he had warmed up to the song, and if the end result was uncommercial it was a beautiful way to end the night's recording. "Raised On Rock"/For Ol' Times Sake" was released in September of 1973, the album Raised On Rock a month later. When both album and single proved commercial failures, RCA took it as yet another sign that they had to get rid of Felton entirely. But when they tried to set up a meeting with the star, they learned how seriously they had misjudged the situation. Elvis had gone more that fifteen years without taking a direction of any kind from the label, and he wasn't about to start now, there would be no firing. On October 9, 1973, Priscilla and Elvis walked out of a Santa Monica courthouse together, their divorce final. Newspaper photographs despicted the couple as composed and friendly, but just days later Elvis was rushed from Graceland to the hospital with breathing and congestion problems. *The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen* Elvis left us with so many great songs. This is another song I love. When I listen to this, I can hear the pain in his voice. You can have fame and fortune, but without the one you love by your side, there is nothing. I believe with all my heart Prescilla is the only woman Elvis ever loved. He looked so happy in the photo below.

Before you go walk out on me Take a look around tell me what you see Here I stand like an open book Is there something here you might have overlooked It would be a shame if you should leave And find that freedom ain't what you thought it would be The years we had were not all bad In fact I know the good outweighed the bad Now you say that you've grown tired You want to be by yourself a while It would be a shame if you should go And find that freedom was a long time ago I know that you can't stand the chains that bind you They just keep on drivin' us apart You could go where I could never find you But could you go far enough to get away from your heart So one more time, for ol' times sake Come and lay your head upon my chest Please don't throw this moment away We can forget the bad and take the best If you don't have nothing left to say Let me hold you one more time for ol' times sake If you don't have nothing left to say Let me hold you one more time for ol' times sake Words & music: Tony Joe White Recorded: 1973/07/23, first released on single
