Soundtrack Recordings for MGM's Jailhouse Rock April 30 and May 3, 1957:
                                                         Radio MGM Soundstage, Hollywood

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller couldn't have been less interested when Jean Aberbach suggested they get involved in the Jailhouse Rock movie production. As they waited for Elvis to arrive at Radio Recorders, where Big Mama Thornton had recorded the original version of "Hound Dog," they were feeling skeptical at best about the whole enterprise. They were sure this country kid would be musically ignorant, not to mention too spoiled to do real work. Elvis and some of his Memphis buddies, including disc jockey George Klein, his high school classmate, had arrived by train in Los Angeles the night before; when the group tumbled into the studio the impression they made only alarmed the songwriters more. But the polite southern boy, whom Mike and Jerry would later label a kind of "idiot savant," charmed them immediately. Not only was Elvis a big fan of all the important R&B acts ot the past decade, Ray Charles, Wynonie Harris, but he could discuss, in minute detail, the kinds of obscure R&B records Jerry and Mike thought only they'd ever heard. As work began, their astonishment grew. Elvis was no lucky go-getter: He wanted to work as hard as they did, insisting on a kind of perfection that had less to do with faultlessness than it did with emotional satisfaction. In a way that rarely happens to songwriters (and would never again happen during Elvis's career), Jerry and Mike became an integral part of the recording effort, both in the control room and on the studio floor.
The next morning Leiber and Stoller stayed on to help with their song, "I Want To Be Free." Once again the film called for three versions and once again the boys got a slow start, probably because Elvis spent most of the morning singing gospel music around the piano with the Jordanaires. Durning the lunch break MGM's representative, Jeff Alexander, told the quartet they had to get back to work, but when Elvis figured out why everyone was edging away from him, he got so angry, he simply walked out of the studio, and stayed away unil Friday.
Recorded May 3, 1957, first released on LP: Jailhouse Rock 1957.

Personal Note: The top picture was found on the Internet. My daughter redid this with the picture of Elvis which I think is beautiful and looks so much better than the original. Thank you Regina.
There's no joy in my heart,
only sorrow
And I'm sad
as a man can be
I sit alone in the darkness
of my lonely room
And this room
is a prison to me

I look out window
and what do I see
I see a bird
way up in the tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree

Oh what good are my eyes,
they can't see you
And my arms,
they can't hold you so tight
I have two lips
that are yearning,
but they're no good to me
Cause I know I can't kiss you tonight

I look at window
and what to I see
I see a bird
way up in the tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree
