| Studio Session for RCA May 15-21, 1971 RCA's Studio B, Nashville |
| May 20, determined to capture the mood he achieved while performing at home, Elvis sat down at the piano for an impassioned yet unassuming solo set. Two of the three songs he chose had been favorites as far back as his days in Germany: "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" and Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Will Be True," both of which he'd recorded on his home equipment in Bad Nauheim. This old material was hardly what Felton or RCA were looking for in an Elvis session, but Al Pachucki was ready with the tapes rolling just the same. Felton was determind to get back to contempory material, though, material that could give them that much-needed hit. Michael Jarrett and Sonny Charles's "I'm Leaving" seemed to offer Elvis the challenge he craved. "Phew, man, it's tough," he declare after one disorganized run-through. "But the thing is worth working on." Elvis saw his confidence in the song echoed by the Imperials and pianist David Briggs, who thought it was a hit for sure. June 1971 In June as scheduled, RCA released Love Letters From Elvis, an album Jon Landau in Rolling Stones called "the most discouraging event in the last three years of Presley's career." It was dismissed by others as "a bunch of leftovers," and in fact that was what it was. (These are not my words, this is what's written in the book.) For the Colonel and RCA this was business as usual, but the poor sales were just what RCA should have expected for a hodgepodge product that violated Elvis's own judgement of his material. The fact that Elvis had approved none of the songs on the album for previous release should have been indication enough of their quality, but apparently the Colonel and RCA had begun to lose focus on just what had turned Elvis's career around: not the haphazard creation of new product, but, on a very basis level, the quality of the work he was releasing. "Life," a song for which Elvis had little tolerance, was chosen as the single from the album; it flopped too, peaking at number fifty-three---twenty places below the previous disappointment, "Rags To Riches." Hoping to make up lost ground, RCA rushed "I'm Leavin'" from the recent May sessions into release (backed with "Heart Of Rome" from the album), but the haunting if uncommercial ballad peaked at number thirty-six. Sales on all Elvis's 1971 releases were poor, in fact, but that didn't stop RCA from flooding the market with far more product than Elvis was contracted to produce. *The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen* |
