| Studio Sessions for RCA July 20-25, 1973: Stax Studios, Memphis Tired from being on the road, distressed by the divorce proceedings, and expecting Lisa Marie for a month long visit, Elvis could not have faced the prospect of a string of recording sesions happily. The most practical arrangement was to stay in Memphis, and Marty Lacker suggested making the five minute drive to the Stax studio on McLemore Avenue, which in the last ten years had virtually invented the genre of southern soul and become the kind of creative force that Sun Records once was in Memphis. There really wasn't all that much choice. American's Chip Moman had long since left town, and Marty, who had been instrumental in bringing Elvis to American, had moved over to work for Stax. While most of the American musicians now lived in Nashville, they were glad enough of the opportunity to come home for a good-paying gig, and RCA was perfectly happy with the arrangement. Marty booked the session for July. It was obvious from the start something was very wrong with Elvis Presley. Despite the studio's proximity to Graceland, Elvis failed to show up for the 8 P.M. scheduled start on July 20. When he finally arrived at eleven o'clock, dressed in a cape, piano player Bobby Wood recalls that "he had gained weight. Hie eyes were yellow. His complexion was yellow....I couldn't believe it was the same guy. He looked totally different and acted totally different, too. He had a Korean or Japanese guy with him, Kang Rhee, his karate teacher. They were doing a movie or something together." On that first night Elvis left the stufio after four hours, having recorded absolutely nothing He arrived late again on the following night. The rehearsal of "It's Diffe'rent Now" by Freddy's writer Clive Westlaker, which was soon abandoned (one incomplete take was taped.) The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen * What you are listening to, is the rehearsal from that recording session. Recorded July 21, 1973. Released on Walk A Mile In My Shoes: The Essential 70's Masters. This is the only known recording of "It's Diff'rent Now." I personally think this is a beautiful song and wish Elvis had completed it. Top Picture and Animation are assorted photo's from 1973. I am dedicating this to one of our new members, Jerry. I hope you enjoy it.* |

| Look at you and tell myself How wonderful you are You're so different now To me you're much more wonderful, more wonderful by far Yes, you're different now There's more to love than holding hands and stealing kisses No-one else around There's the good times and the bad There's the ups and downs we've had But it's different now I'm so glad I still have you Ah There's always something new to see I look at you, you look at me And we're so different now Love gets better every day 'n in some peculiar way It's always different now If we ever say goodbye, you'd be lost And so would I, what's the difference now between us Love just for a day, and a love that's here to stay That's the difference now, the difference now Words & music: Clive Westlake |
