March 20, 1974: Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis

Elvis hadn't performed in his hometown since the 1961 charity show, making the appearance something of an event; beyond a little extra time spent on the recording setup, though, no special effort was made to distinguish this show from the long procession that had come before. RCA's recording truck pulled up to the Mid-South Coliseum before the show; there was no rehearsal, just a cursory sound check. and no backup plan should anything go wrong at the single performance. The show itself featured just three numbers that hadn't been previously released. 12,300 pay to see the last stop on the tour. RCA records the show and is released as
Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis 1974.
This concert was added almost as an afterthought, prompted by public demand and separated from the first four Memphis concerts by already scheduled concerts in Richmond, Virginia, and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. RCA captured a performance no more worked out or planned than any other stop along the way. The result conveyed more of a sense of tour-end relief than the keyed-up exuberance that makes for a great live album, with on-the-scene reviewers noting the gaudiness of Elvis' costume and the dramatic unfurling of the American flag during his performance of "An American Trilogy." The
Memphis Press-Scimitar compared Elvis to Julius Caesar and suggested that his entrance to the strains of "2001" might have been the high point of the show.
For once Elvis is home when a tour ends, and he goes to Graceland that night, remaining there through the month of April.

Dancing to the jailhouse rock
Dancing to the jailhouse rock

Everybody in the whole cell block
was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
Well, you ain't never caught a SCARF
and you ain't no friend of mine.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
