Studio Sessions for RCA September 1-3, 1956: Radio Recorders, Hollywood

RCA booked Radio Recorders, a studio on Santa Monica Boulevard known to be the best recording facility in Los Angeles, not least because of engineer Thorne Nogar. A big man, Nogar conveyed a sense of calm and patient support and worked well with all kinds of artists. His experience with movie productions made him an expert on microphone placement in the large recording room at Radio Recorders called the Annex. For him the Presley group would be a piece of cake. Elvis took an instant liking to Thorne, finding him someone whose judgement he could trust, someone who could actually help in the studio---as opposed to Steve Sholes, who just sat and offered encouragement. When Elvis arrived he was met by a guard and a "No Visitors Allowed" sign, both indications that the Colonel had done his work. Bill Bullock and Steve Sholes were on hand with the Colonel, as well as West Coast sales-and-promotion manager Robert Mosley. Sporting a beautiful tan and dressed in black pants and patterned shirt, Elvis appeared ready to put all his anxieties behind him and focus on the agenda: and album and a new single.
Sitting down at the piano, he warmed up with the band, singing whatever came to mind. The 20th Century executives hadn't thought he was good enough to play on "Love Me Tender," but here he was, serenading an enthralled crowd with his singing and playing. They started with the new Stan Kesler ballad "Playing For Keeps," with Elvis still at the piano because no keyboard player had been hired for the session. He and Gordon Stoker would split the piano work, with Elvis for the most part playing on songs he'd performed at home, some for many years. This new song presented more of a challenge, and Elvis insisted on eighteen takes before he agreed that number seven would work if the ending from the last take was spliced on. The master of "Playing For Keeps" is spliced from take 7 and ending of take 18.
Recorded September 1, 1956, first released as Single B-side, "Too Much/Playing For Keeps" January 1957

(The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen)

I'm playin' for keeps
This time it's real
And I want you to know
Exactly how I feel
I'm playin' for keeps
For sure this time
And I won't be happy
Until I know you're mine

There have been others
That could love me true
But no one else can thrill me like you do
I'm playin' for keeps
Oh love me too
Oh, don't make me sorry
That I fell in love with you

There have been others
That could love me true
But no one else can thrill me like you do
I'm playin' for keeps
Oh love me too
Oh, don't make me sorry
That, that I fell in love with you
