Studio Sessions for RCA
March 18-19, 1962: RCA's Studio B, Nashville
The group that gathered once more in RCA's Studio B in Nashville on a March Sunday was in many ways a carbon copy of the group Elvis had been working with for two years. Chet Atkins and Steve Sholes were still formally in charge, but as usual Elvis ran the show. Bill Porter was the engineer, and almost all the usual musicians checked in. The gap left by Hank Garland/s incapacitating accident had been partally glossed over by Jerry Kennedy during the "Good Luck Charm" sessions, but Chet Atkins knew they would need to do something more to fill Hank's shoes in the long term. No greater tribute to Garland's genius could be paid than the fact it took two of Nashville's most celebrated guitarists, Harold Bradley and Grady Martin, to fill the bill.
*Guitarist Hank Garland, who'd lent such fire and authority to Elvis's sound since June '58 session, had suffered serious brain damage in an automoble accident; he was replaced by the less versatile Jerry Kennedy, leaving Scotty Moore back in charge for the first time since Elvis had returned from the army.*
One of the last songs of the session,
"Suspicion," was another rhythmic departure, but this time it had hit written all over it. Elvis had saved the best for the last; the song seemed built to showcase every little vocal trick in his bag, without ever devolving into parody..
     Recorded March 19, 1962. Singles:
Kiss Me Quick/Suspicion, April 1964 Gold Standard Series Original release LP: Pot Luck. Terry Stafford had a number-three hit with his version of "Suspicion" earlier in the year.

Ev'rytime you kiss me
I’m still not certain that you love me
Ev'ry time you hold me
I’m still not certain that you care
Though you keep on saying
you really, really, really love me
do you speak the same words
To someone else when I’m not there

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me

Ev'rytime you call me
and tell me we should meet tomorrow
I can't help but think that
you're meeting someone else tonight
Why should our romance just
keep on causing me such sorrow?
Why am I so doubtful
whenever you're out of sight?

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me

Darling, if you love me,
I beg you wait a little longer
Wait until I drive all
these foolish fears out of my mind
How I hope and pray that
our love will keep on growing stronger
Maybe I’m suspicious
'cause true love is so hard to find

Suspicion torments my heart
Suspicion keeps us apart
Suspicion why torture me
