Studio Sessions for RCA
July 20-25, 1973: Stax Studios, Memphis
It was obvious from the start that something was very wrong with Elvis Presley. Felton Jarvis knew he was in trouble. Elvis had recorded only nine of the twenty-four songs expected by RCA. In a session marred by technical problems Felton's favorite engineer, Al Pachucki, had fallen from grace. The new publishing arrangements were bringing in no more worthwhile material than the old. The RCA schedule had called for a new single in September and a new album the following month. For the moment there was little he could do about it: Elvis would be unavailable for any more recordings until he had completed his Las Vegas engagement in September.
There was pressure on Elvis from all directions. His health was still slipping, and while divorce proceedings continued Priscilla had begun to grant interviews, allowing disturbing stories about his private life to appear in the press for the very first time. In Las Vegas he began rehearsals on July 31, working on new songs like
"Portrait Of My Love" and "The Twelfth Of Never," along with older Presley hits like "I Feel So Bad." "Such A Night," and "She's Not You."

Studio Rehearsals
August 16, 1974: RCA Studios, Hollwood
For the August Las Vegas engagement Elvis rehearsed a substantial amount of new material, including the current single "If You Talk In Your Sleep," the upcoming single "Promised Land," as well as "It's Midnight," "Your Love's Been A Long Time Coming," and the haunting "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues." Working harder than he usually did at the rehearsals, he concentrated on two personal favorites, "I'm Leaving" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," despite the fact they had been commercial failures when they were released. He added two unrecorded numbers, "The Twelfth Of Never" and "Softly As I Leave You." (These two performances were recorded directly from the mixing console onto a substandard-quality cassette tape. "The Twelfth Of Never" rehearsal was released on Walk A Mile In My Shoes, The Complete 70's Masters.) Yet after a good deal of preparation much of the new material was abandoned, because the show seemed to lack the excitement it had achieved in the past.

You ask how much I need you
Must I explain
I need you oh my darling
Like roses need rain

You ask how long I'll love you
I'll tell you true
Until the twelfth of never I'll still be loving you

Hold me close
Never let me go
Hold me close
Melt my heart like April snow

I'll love you 'till the blue bells forget to bloom
I'll love you 'till the clover has lost its perfume
I'll love you 'till the poets run out of rhyme

Oh, until the twelfth of never
And that's a long long time
Until the twelfth of never
And that's a long long time
