| Thrill Of Your Love," a ballad with a gospel flavor by Stan Kesler (who'd written two of Elvis's Sun sides as well as RCA's "Playing For Keeps:). He had gotten the song into the session through Jack Clement, the former Sun engineer and producer who now worked for Chet Atkins. The band took to it instantly, and Elvis sang his heart out to complete the recording in just three takes. Artistically, the album Elvis Is Back was a triumph on every level. Every one of the earlier albums had had its musical compromises. The publicity boast for 1960 rang perfectly true: Elvis had never been heard like this before, except perhaps by himself in his own head. There was new depth to his voice; his interpretations were increasingly sophisticated; the group was probably the best studio band in the business; the song selection was imaginative and varied, the technical quality excellent. It was as if Elvis had invented his own brand of music, broken down the barriers of genre and prejudice to express everything he heard in all kinds of music he loved.
