| Elvis wanted to record "You Gave Me A Mountain" in February 1969, but Freddy Bienstock was unable to make publishing deals for this and a few other songs. "You Gave Me A Mountain" was first recorded for the Live Recordings for RCA February 16, 1972: The Hilton, Las Vegas, the midnight show.I took this version from the Live Recordings for RCA January 12, 1972: H.I.C. Arena, Honolulu, Aloha From Hawaii album. I remember watching this special, wondering if it was tears I saw or perspiration. I felt it was tears, he had just gone through a divorce, you could see the pain on his face. It was not long after the Aloha Special that I saw Elvis in concert for the first and last time. The show was almost the same exact concert as the Aloha Special. |

| Born in the heat of the desert My mother died giving me life Deprived of the love of a father Blamed for the loss of his wife You know Lord I've been in a prison For something that I never done It's been one hill after another I've climbed them all one by one But this time, Lord you gave me a mountain A mountain you know I may never climb It isn't just a hill any longer You gave me a mountain this time My woman got tired of heartaches Tired of the grief and the strife So tired of working for nothing Just tired of being my wife She took my one ray of sunshine She took my pride and my joy She took my reason for living She took my small baby boy But this time, Lord you gave me a mountain A mountain you know I may never climb It isn't just a hill any longer You gave me a mountain this time (words & music by Marty Robbins) Recorded: 1973/01/14, first released on Aloha from Hawaii |
