| Recorded September 11, 1967, RCA's Studio B, Nashville, first released as a Single B-side. It was Chip Young, or maybe Harold Bradley, who suggested "Hi-Heel Sneakers" as a good lead-in to the second night of the recording sessions. No one intended to go behind Freddy Bienstock's back in making the recommendation; it just seemed like a good idea. The song was no more than a jam, really, and even with Felton Jarvis encouraging them to pick up the tempo, it ran on for five minutes, at least two minutes longer than a single. The record's hard-romping beat harked back to 1960's "Reconsider Baby" and "Down In The Alley" from Felton's first session with Elvis; it had a raunchy barroom sound, with Charlie McCoy's harp wailing high over Boots Randolph's sax. Best of all, Elvis was clearly enjoying himself, throwing in ad-libs and calling for the band to "do the mess around" before the first solo. On the next verse they all cut loose, with Charlie's bluesy fills, Harold Bradley's unusual electrified sitar sound, and Floyd Cramer's piano completing the audio picture. Even when he'd run out of lyrics Elvis scatted right along with the horn riff Boots and Charlie were playing; then he came back for another verse, with Buddy Harman hammering the offbeat on the cymbal, before wrapping it up: "All right, take it home, baby, take it home." The master of "Hi-Heel Sneakers" was edited from five minutes down to 2:44 for its original record release. (The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen) This is for Susan, a friend who is a little depressed. Hope this brings a smile to your face. Keep your chin up, put on your red dress, go out on the town and live life to the fullest!! When ones heart is broken, wish the best for the other. |
