| "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" recorded February 3, 1956: RCA Studios, New York, first released September 1956 as Single B-side to Shake, Rattle and Roll. "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" was first recorded February 1966-early 1967: Rocca Place, Hollywood, Home Recordings. It was among five which were discovered on an acetate and released in part during the 1960's. This version is from the 1968 Comeback Special, Elvis's first performance before an audience in seven years. To help Elvis to relax, Steve Binder, expanding on the live performance portion of the show, had arranged to bring in Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana, the two surviving members of Elvis's original trio, to tape an informal jam session in the "boxing ring" format. Determined to recreate the casual "rehearsals" Elvis held in his own dressing room--and hoping to combat Elvis's nerves--Binder added Elvis pals Charlie Hodge and Alan Fortas, along with Elvis's movie stand-in, Lance Legault; together, Binder hoped, they would act as a kind of buffer for Elvis as well as prompting him with subjects to talk about. Elvis, Scotty, and Charlie Hodge would play guitars, D.J. would use a guitar case for a drum, and Alan Fortas and Lance Legault would add guitar back-slapping and tambourine to the ensemble. Steve's idea of capturing Elvis at his most basic was becoming central to his vivion of the special, but two days away from taping he was still fighting to include the sequence. With all the other elements of the show firmly in place, he was afraid Elvis might back out at the last minute. Elvis simply asked, "What if nobody likes me?" On the night of the taping, once he walked out on stage, surrounded by his friends, he began to relax, and his native charm took over. "Good night," he told the audience as he arrived, and Charlie Hodge chimed in with his best W.C. Fields" "It's been a long show." Ice thus broken. Elvis made jokes off the typed-out cues the writers had supplied him with, and with his self-mocking ad-libs he won over the audience in a heartbeat. ( The Complete Recording Sessions by Ernst Jorgensen) And as they say, the rest is history. I could go on and on about the Comeback Special, especially about that black leather suit, but need to save room for the lyrics. |
