Recorded May 21, 1971 at RCA's Studio B, Nashville, "Love Me, Love The Life I Lead" was a distinctly average song from Freddy's English firm, and it was recorded on the eighth and last night of the sessions to nothing but ill will from Elvis.. "Don't want to hear that damn demo," he complained. "I'm not sure whether that beginning is worth a damn."  As the night wore on he became increasingly irritable: "These guys would hold up the Second Coming for a cigarette, "he sniped during a break. It was frustration more than anything, but when one of the female backup singers asked "Are the girls balanced? "he showed he hadn't lost his sense of humor: "You should never ask that dear." The sessions were running out of steam, and Elvis out of voice, but he ran through twelve takes, with Felton counting on getting Elvis to recut his vocal later if they wanted to release it. Elvis never did, but the record still came out. Released on LP: Elvis (Fool), 1973.

I am not a wise man neither am I a fool
But what I am the way the good Lord made me
Though I need you more than you may ever understand
I can't wear a face that will betray me

Oh, If you're gonna love me, love the life I lead
Need the things I need, don't try to change me
If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am
I can't be another man, I can't be free
'Cos The life I lead is the life I lead

Money in my pocket never seems to last too long
I've gambled on the way and drowned my sorrows
Though God knows I can't pretend it's better on my own
I can't promise you a new tomorrow

Oh, If you're gonna love me, love the life I lead
Need the things I need, don't try to change me
If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am
I can't be another man, I can't be free
'Cos The life I lead is the life I lead
