Recording Sessions for RCA June 4-8, 1970: RCA's Studio B, Nashville. New sessions, new material----and this time the principal supplier was once again Freddy Bienstock, but now almost entirely from the catalogue of Carlin, the British company he'd just bought from his cousins )and former Hill & Range employers), Jean and Julian Aberbach. The Aberbachs continued to be involved with the Elvis repertoire themselves, but in a competitive role; Julian himself had commissioned a new song, "Stranger In The Crowd," from staff writer Winfield Scott, and Lamar Fike, Elvis's former employee, continued in his role as their principal song-plugged working at Hill & Range's Nashville office.
One other result of the thirty-month absence from Nashville---and a favorable one from Felton's point of view---was the opportunity to put together a newer, hipper studio band. The new band---James Burton (guitar), David Briggs (piano), Norbert Putnam (bass), Chip Young (rhythm guitar), Charlie McCoy (harmonica, bass, and organ), and Jerry Carrigan (drums)--all (except for Burton) had longstanding connections with Felton, and their versatile, fluid, rootsy playing made them Nashville's new starting lineup.
"Stranger In The Crowd" was recorded June 5, 1970, first released on
That's The Way It Is 1970. Also recorded live for That's The Way It Is, The International Hotel, Las Vegas August 13, 1970 Dinner Show
I've been standing on a corner
Since a quarter after seven
I was down to my last cigarette
And the clock in the window
At a quarter to eleven

I was watching all the people
Passing by me going places
Just the loneliest guy in the town
Looking for a friendly smile
But all I see were faces

And then, just like the taste of milk and honey
I found the stranger I've been looking for
Like a wave, my cup of love was overflowing
I knew the stranger in the crowd
And I would be strangers no more

The love that comes on the corner
At a quarter to eleven
I thought you were to good to be true
All my life I had believed
That angels only live in heaven
But now, we share the taste of milk and honey
Each day is sweeter than the day before

My cup runned overflowing
because the stranger in the crowd
And I would be strangers no more

Deep inside, my cup of love was overflowing
I found the stranger I've been looking for
Like a wave, my cup of love was overflowing
I knew the stranger in the crowd
And I would be strangers no more

I knew the stranger in the crowd
And I would be strangers no more
