Tired from being on the road, distressed by the divorce proceedings, and expecting Lisa Marie for a month-long visit, Elvis could not have faced the prospect of a string of recording sessions happily. The most practical arrangement was to stay in Memphis, and Marty Lacker suggested making the five-minute drive to the Stax studio on McLemore Avenue, which in the last ten years had virtually invented the genre of southern soul and become the kind of creative force that Sun Records once was in Memphis. There really wasn't all that much choice. American's Chips Moman had long since left town, and Marty, who had been instrumental in bringing Elvis to American, had moved over to work for Stax. While most of the American musicians now lived in Nashville, they were glad enough of the opportunity to come home for a good-paying gig, and RCA was perfectly happy with the arrangement. Marty booked the session for late July.
Recorded July, 22, 1973, "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" came from Tony Joe White's critically acclaimed 1972 album
The Train I'm On, and it was coming along fine as they rehearsed it---maybe a little too fast, but with real swing. After one take Elvis kidded himself: "I screwed up the first part. I was singing 'Heartbreak Hotel.'...Hang on to it. We'll do the tail end later. Mail it in." This kind of chatter was a sure sign that Elvis was feeling good, that he was being patient, if not with himself then at least with his fellow musicians. First released as single I've Got A Thing About You Baby/Take Good Care Of Her, January 1974.

I've got something to tell you
That I think you ought to know
That my eyes are on you baby
Since a long time ago
And now I fin'ly got the nerve
And I'm gonna make my move
Now don't you try to turn me off
Cause it's gonna be hard to do

I've got a thing about you baby
Ain't nothing I can do
I've got a thing about you baby
A thing about lovin' you

Ain't it just like a woman
When she knows she's got a man
She'll wring you out and turn you 'bout
In the palm of her hand
And then she starts to thinkin'
Then maybe she's put you in a blind
She'll give you just a little lovin'
It'll drive you out of your mind

I've got a thing about you baby
Ain't nothing you can do
I've got a thing about you baby
A thing about lovin' you
