Elvis was due back in RCA's Nashville studios on September 21, 1970 to deliver two last cuts for the Elvis Country album. But the day came and went, and when he finally did arrive from LA, twenty-four hours later, he seemed irritated and out-of-sorts that several of those present began to wonder what was wrong. Priscilla was with him that day and to one of the musicians she intimated, without being too specific, that there were reasons.
From the start Elvis was badgering Felton Javis to speed it up--he needed to fly back to LA that night. Work began with a cover of Anne Murray's "Snowbird"; it was a pretty song, but tossed off with no attempt at an original arrangement. Elvis love the next tune, a new Dallas Frazier-Doodle Owens ballad, "Where Did They Go Lord?" With its single potential in mind, he belted it out at full throttle.
Recorded September 22, 1970. First released as a single; Rags To Riches/Where Did They Go Lord, February 1971. On the Charts:
Billboard's Hot 100, 7 weeks-peaked at #33, Country, peaked at #55, Easy Listening, peaked at #18.
I did this page for myself, another sad, yet beautiful song.....................
Where Did They Go Lord
The words of her promise
The flame of her faith
The love that would never drift away
Where did they go Lord, where did they go?

You know somehow forever
Slipped out of my hands
And my dreams ran away with the wind
Where did they go Lord, where did they go

You know sometimes I wish
I had lost her to another
Well but Lord she just walked off all alone
And the heart that's within me isn’t bitter just hurt
And bewildered because her love is gone

Oh the passion I trusted
The truth that I leaned on
And the hope that would forever keep me strong
I cry out my questions
Oh, the answers are all gone
Where did they go Lord, tell me where did they go
Where did they go Lord, tell me where did they go
